Water Dragon |
GaeWyn, The Water Dragon (aka GaeWyn, Queen of the Sea) is my second full sized dragon knit sculpture. GaeWyn is the only female of the 7 dragons. As such, she is mother with her scaled egg. Her design is a cross between mermaid and sea serpent and still all dragon.
She is hand knit with over 60 skeins of yarn, appliqued with dozens of tiny sea creatures and accented with beadwork. Her internal frame is plastic pond (used for landscaping outdoor water features) and PVC pipe. She is my ‘friends and family’ dragon, as many of the blue yarns for the water were gifted to me. The finished water is 13+ feet long and 22 inches tall. Her body is Malabrigo silky merino, hands and eye circles were knit from Panda Silk, hair and tail from Rowan Kidsilk Haze. Beaded eyes are my design using glass beads. Her eyes, head and tail are moveable for photos and display. Size: 40 inches width, 66 inches height (includes 29 inch table) and 50 inches depth. Sea creatures: sea turtle named SeaMore, Octopus named Marley, Jewel backed crab (wire and rhinestones) named Douglas (for author Douglas Adams who wrote Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), shrimp (Scampi family) and dozens of jellyfish, corals and seashells. These yarns include from my stash: Jamieson Shetland, Mango Moon, Skacel sock and many other sock yarns. Design time of 3 months, knit time of 8 months. Photos by my daughter: Kiah Springer Thanks to my family for a year of patience while I design and become consumed in my dragon-ness. |
